Even if you don’t have room for a regular garden, you can still enjoy growing and harvesting fresh vegetables all summer long by cultivating your crops in containers. If the sun shines for a good part of the day on a balcony, driveway, front step, patio, porch, or sidewalk, you’ve got prime gardening real estate for a container, or a collection of pots filled with vegetables. This presentation by local Master Gardener, Lynn Clark, will cover the basics of container gardening including how to select a container, soil, plant selection, and basic care. While most of the focus will be on vegetables, all information can also apply to flowers.

The Johnsons began in 1995 with a clean slate and turned this location into a diverse yard with the feel of an old-fashioned English garden. You will view more than 100 rose bushes, an assortment of fruit-bearing trees, a vegetable garden, and a stream flowing into a fishpond with a sprinkling of flowering annuals in pots throughout. You will enjoy the sights and sounds of birds among the yard art and birdhouses.

Recycle! Reuse! Reinvent! Rescued cast-off plants from yard waste sites make up 80 percent of this garden demonstrating one person’s trash is another’s treasure. As the seasons change, so does the character of the gardens. Nestled in the backyard is a meditation area designed for moments
of reflection inspired by the owner’s practicing approach to Buddhism.
Tim & Terri Verhasselt
2889 Vercauteren Drive
Green Bay, WI 54313
They began creating this little piece of paradise in 1997, taking on the challenge of a multi-terraced yard and filling it with plants and art. Come sit and enjoy the pond and fairy garden, 700 varieties of hostas, many perennials, and annuals. You will be amazed by all the colors, including the glass art and many reimagined objects. You will leave with an awakened sense of imagination of what could be and the beauty in the ordinary.

Pollinator Gardens Tour in the Shadows of Lambeau Field!
August 23, 2023

1213 Shadow Lane, Green Bay, WI 54304
The August 23rd meeting showcased a 3rd year garden displaying a 20ft x 30ft pollinator exclusive area with over 500 native Wisconsin plants with the intention to host and feed more than 17 Lepidoptera species as well as many other pollinator insects. Also featured this year in the garden is a space devoted to the Haudenosaunee (Iriquois) “the three sisters” planting of corn, beans, and squash.

August 2022 - Tour at the De Pere property of Jim and Sandy LaLuzerne
Touring this remarkable property is a rare opportunity to see a living example of how much can be done to re-create a native habitat. Not only does this property have hundreds of different flowers, grasses, water plants, sedges, and ferns, but it also has over 160 different species of woody trees, shrubs, and vines—the vast majority being species native to the local area. It is a haven for birds, butterflies, and wildlife of all kinds.
The original five-acre lot was a barren cornfield. In 1976, Sandi and Jim LaLuzerne began with the plan to return every species that might have been on the property. This required creating a half-acre pond with flowing water features. Eventually 18 additional contiguous acres were added and over two miles of trails were established. This informal and friendly space, with many benches and vistas, illustrates what can be done with perseverance, “intelligent tinkering” and some help from Mother Nature. It is not a preservation, but is a re-creation that looks like it was always there. This property has been on the Garden Walk sponsored by the Green Bay Botanical Garden, a winner of The Gardeners Club of Green Bay’s Silver Trowel Award, a tour destination for many gardening and environmental clubs, and is a Certified Natural Habitat.
